Frequently Asked Questions

How is your work created?

I work traditionally using a mixture of watercolour, gouache, coloured pencil, NeoColor pastels and sometimes a little bit of Photoshop or Procreate.

What equipment do you use?

I used an iMac, an iPad Pro, apple pencil and Procreate, and my trusty Canon scanner. My favourite btrsuhes are ProArt brushes for gouache. I use Winsor & Newton gouache and Winsor & Newton or Schmincke watercolours. I use Caran d’Ache Supracolor pencils and NeoColor pastels. My favourite paper is Cass Art’s heavy weight cartridge paper, and I use sketchbook from Fabriano and Pith.

How did you get started as an illustrator?

I have been illustrating professionally since I was 17, and I have written about how I got started as an illustrator here. I’ve also written some of my top tips for recent graduates here.

Do you teach?

I teach on Patreon, it’s a lot of fun and we learn lots every month. I also have an online class available on gouache. Keep up to date with future in person classes and retreats via my newsletter.

How do I work with you?

If you’re interested in discussing a project, commissioning an illustration, licensing an existing piece or getting a quote please get in touch via email. I am currently available to take on new projects and collaborations. If you have an idea, let’s make it happen.

How do you normally work?

The first step is for us to have a chat via email or zoom, so I can learn more about the project and create a quote for you. If we’re both happy to proceed, my process usually goes as follows: research and reference image gathering, initial sketches, second round of sketches incorporating amendments, colour palette sample, then final artwork. You’ll have a chance to review the process every step of the way, so we end up with a piece of artwork that you love. Final artwork is sent as a high resolution print ready file in your preferred file format.

I’ve written a children’s book, can you illustrate it?

Unfortunately I only work with publishers, not with self published authors. In my experience making a book is every much a team process, and I love working in a team with art directors, editors and graphic designers, as well as the author. If you have a publisher please do have them get in touch with me.
